Social Media Trends 2027: My 4 Biggest Predictions for Instagram, Content & Design

It’s that time of year again! We’re heading into 2027, which means it’s time to talk about what social media might look like next year.

And I have a few thoughts. 👀

I’ve spent a lot of time this year looking at Instagram trends, new content formats, design styles, and the way people create content for their businesses. It’s literally part of my job at My Social Boutique, and one of my favorite things to do.

And something I’ve found particularly interesting is that we’re seeing two almost opposite developments happening at the same time:

1 – AI is becoming a bigger part of content creation every day. We can generate images, write captions, create videos, and automate tasks that would have taken hours just a few years ago.

2 – At the same time, I’m seeing more content that feels handmade, personal, imperfect, and just very human.

I think both of these developments will have a huge influence on what social media looks like in 2027.

So today, I want to share my four biggest predictions for next year, including what I think will happen with AI, Instagram content formats, and visual design.

Let’s see how many I get right!

1. Personal Branding Will Become More Important Than Ever

I’m starting with what I believe will be one of the biggest developments in social media marketing next year: personal branding.

And I’m not just talking about influencers. I’m talking about founders, freelancers, service providers, designers, coaches, and pretty much anyone who sells something online.

We’re getting to a point where anyone can create content with AI. You can generate a beautiful image in seconds, write an educational Instagram carousel with a single prompt, or create a video without ever picking up a camera.

Which is amazing, obviously.

But when everyone has access to these tools, I think we’ll start paying more attention to something else: the actual person behind the content.

Because while AI can tell me how to run a business, I’m much more interested in hearing from someone who’s actually running one.

Someone who has tried things, made mistakes, changed their mind, worked with real clients, and learned something along the way.

We want to know the people we’re buying from

Think about how you decide which businesses to follow or who to hire.

Especially when it comes to services, education, or digital products, most of us want to know a little about the person behind the business.

Do they seem knowledgeable? Do I like their approach? Do they have interesting opinions? Would I actually enjoy working with them?

And that’s where personal branding becomes so valuable.

I think we’re going to see more business owners who previously stayed behind the scenes start showing up in their content.

Not necessarily by filming themselves talking to the camera every day. You could share your thoughts on something happening in your industry, show how you approach a project, or talk about a business decision you made.

It’s really about letting people see that there’s a person behind the business.

What I think we’ll see more of in 2027

  • Founder diaries and behind-the-scenes content showing what running a business actually looks like.
  • Personal opinions instead of another round of generic educational tips.
  • Recurring content series that give people a reason to come back.
  • More casual photos, personal updates, and everyday moments.
  • Business owners sharing their processes, experiences, and lessons learned.

And please don’t take this as me saying you need to turn your Instagram into a personal diary.

You can absolutely keep your private life private and still have a strong personal brand.

But I do think it’s worth asking yourself: If someone discovered my business today, would they get a sense of who I am and what makes my approach different?

Because I suspect that’s going to matter a lot in 2027.

2. AI Agents Are Coming for Our Content Workflows

Okay, now for something that almost contradicts my first prediction. 😅

While I think we’ll want more human content, I’m also pretty convinced that AI will become an even bigger part of how we create it.

More specifically, I think 2027 could be the year AI agents become a normal part of content marketing for small businesses.

We’ve all gotten pretty used to using AI tools by now. You ask ChatGPT to help with a caption, brainstorm content ideas, or turn your messy notes into something useful.

But with AI agents, things get a lot more interesting.

Instead of asking AI to complete one task, you can have an agent work through an entire process.

Imagine having an agent that researches your Content Guide every month, picks out the ideas that could work for your business, adds them to your calendar, and prepares everything for you to review.

Or one that takes your latest blog article, creates a few social media drafts, and organizes everything for your approval.

Some of this is already possible today, and I’m really curious to see how far we’ll get in 2027.

My prediction is that we’ll see a lot more agentic content creation in 2027, but also a lot of experimentation as businesses figure out what they want to automate and what they’d rather keep doing themselves.

I’m especially curious to see where we all end up with this one.

3. Design Is Getting More Playful, Expressive & Handmade

Now, this is probably the prediction I’m most excited about!

I think we’re moving away from the super-clean, minimal, perfectly polished aesthetic that’s been everywhere for the past few years.

Not completely, of course. Minimalism isn’t going anywhere.

But I’m seeing more and more designs that are colorful, playful, a little weird, and full of personality.

And I LOVE it.

Think scrapbook-style collages, handwritten details, stickers, unexpected typography, quirky illustrations, paper textures, doodles, and layouts that feel like someone had a really good time putting them together.

There’s something about these designs that feels so refreshing right now. Especially when you consider how much perfectly polished, AI-generated imagery we’re seeing every day.

The crafting aesthetic is making its way into digital design

One of the directions I’m watching closely is the influence of crafting and handmade design.

I’m talking about ripped paper, hand-drawn shapes, stamps, scribbles, cutouts, imperfect lines, stitched details, and all those little elements that make something feel like it was created by hand.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this aesthetic is gaining attention while AI-generated visuals are becoming more common.

There’s something really appealing about being able to see the human touch in a design. Even when it’s actually created digitally!

And Canva’s 2026 design trends report gives us a little indication of how popular this direction has become: Searches for DIY and scrapbook-style elements increased by 90% year over year.

Are we moving into a maximalist era?

I think we might be!

We’ve been seeing more bold typography, layered designs, bright colors, and expressive layouts throughout 2026, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this continues next year.

But I also want to make a case for something I’m calling grounded maximalism.

Because not every brand is going to look good with fifteen different fonts, neon colors, and stickers everywhere.

And that’s totally fine.

Maybe your brand is quite minimal and sophisticated. You can still bring in some of these trends without changing your entire visual identity.

Use a bold headline on an otherwise simple carousel. Add a handwritten note to a clean photo layout. Or experiment with a more playful composition while keeping your usual colors.

Sometimes a little unexpected detail is enough.

5 design trends I’m watching for 2027

Scrapbook & collage designs: Layered photos, ripped paper, tape, stickers, and handwritten notes. I especially love this look for storytelling carousels and personal brands.

Craft-inspired graphics: Paper cutouts, hand-drawn illustrations, stamps, stitching, and all kinds of tactile textures.

Whimsical illustrations: Playful little characters, unexpected objects, and quirky details that make a design feel more fun.

Expressive typography: Oversized text, mixed typefaces, distorted lettering, curved headlines, and typography that becomes the design itself.

Grounded maximalism: More personality, color, and texture, but still with a cohesive look that fits your brand.

And if you want to experiment with some of these styles, you definitely don’t need to redesign your entire Instagram feed.

That’s one of the things I love about using Canva templates. You can experiment with a new style without spending hours creating something from scratch.

And of course, we’re always adding new designs inspired by emerging trends to the My Social Boutique template library and our weekly Trend Edit.

4. I Think We’re Getting Another Year of Instagram Carousels (YAY!)

Can we talk about how nice it’s been to see carousels getting so much attention again?

For a while, it felt like Instagram was all about Reels.

Everything needed to be a video. Preferably short, with trending audio, fast cuts, and some kind of hook in the first two seconds.

And while I definitely think Reels have their place, I’m so happy that carousels have been getting more love again.

I personally really enjoy a good carousel. Especially one that tells an interesting story, shares a strong opinion, or teaches me something I actually want to know.

And I think we’ll see plenty more of them in 2027.

Why I think carousels are here to stay

For starters, they’re incredibly versatile.

You can create educational content, tell personal stories, share photos, show your work, introduce a product, or talk about something happening in your industry.

And for a lot of business owners, they’re simply easier to create than video.

You don’t need to film yourself, set up lighting, record voiceovers, or spend ages editing. You can take an idea, put together a few slides, and have a really good piece of content ready to share.

Which is especially nice when you’re running a business and content creation is just one of the 500 things on your to-do list.

And the performance data is interesting, too.

According to Socialinsider’s Instagram benchmarks, carousels had a slightly higher average engagement rate than Reels in its 2025 dataset, with 0.55% compared to 0.52% for Reels.

That’s not an enormous difference, and it certainly doesn’t mean carousels will outperform Reels for every account. But I do think it’s a good reminder that video isn’t the only format worth investing in.

I also think recurring carousel series will get bigger

This is something I’ve been talking about a lot lately.

Instead of constantly coming up with completely new content ideas, what if you created a few recurring series that you post every week or month?

Maybe a weekly founder diary, a monthly roundup, a series about your client projects, or a regular post where you share something you’ve learned.

You keep the same general format and visual style, but change the actual content.

I love this approach because it makes planning so much easier, and it also helps people start recognizing your content.

It’s actually the idea behind our Original Series Carousel Pack at My Social Boutique, which includes nine different recurring carousel concepts designed in Canva’s continuous carousel format.

You pick a few series that fit your business, customize the templates, and reuse them whenever you have something new to share.

So much easier than trying to invent an entirely new concept every time you want to post!

So, What Will Social Media Look Like in 2027?

Looking at all four predictions together, I think we’re heading into a really interesting year.

We’ll have access to more powerful AI tools than ever before, and I suspect many of us will start automating parts of our content creation that we never thought we’d be able to automate.

But at the same time, I think we’ll care more about the actual people behind the businesses we follow.

And visually, I hope we’ll see more personality, more experimentation, and a little less pressure to make everything look perfectly polished.

As for Instagram? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for another great year of carousels. And maybe even a little static-post comeback.

Here’s a quick recap of my four predictions:

My 2027 predictionWhat I think we’ll see
Personal brands keep growingMore founder stories, real experiences, opinions, and behind-the-scenes content
AI agents enter content marketingMore automated research, planning, repurposing, and content workflows
Design gets more expressiveCrafting aesthetics, collage, whimsical illustrations, and playful maximalism
Carousels remain popularMore recurring content series, storytelling carousels, and possibly more static posts

What does this mean for your content strategy?

First of all, please don’t feel like you need to change your entire content strategy because we’re entering a new year.

You really don’t.

I think the best thing you can do is look at these trends and ask yourself which ones actually make sense for your business.

Maybe you’ve been wanting to show more of yourself in your content. Maybe you’d love to create a recurring Instagram series so you don’t have to come up with completely new ideas every week. Or maybe you’re just excited to try some of the more playful design trends we’re seeing right now.

Pick something that interests you and give it a try!

And remember, you don’t have to follow every trend. In fact, I think knowing which ones to skip is just as important as knowing which ones to try.
