Open Instagram or TikTok right now and it feels like there’s a new trend every five minutes.
One week everyone is sharing the things they find “kinda chic,” the next we’re giving ourselves gold stars.
And while some trends disappear almost as quickly as they arrived, I actually think they can be really useful for businesses and personal brands.
But there’s a big difference between using trends and building your entire content strategy around them.
So, should you be jumping on social media trends as a business owner?
Why are social media trends so popular right now?
I think one of the biggest reasons is actually pretty simple: trends give us a format to work with, without telling us exactly what to say.
You don’t have to come up with a completely new concept from scratch. The basic idea is already there, but you get to fill it with your own opinions, personality, experiences or expertise.
And that makes trends especially interesting for personal brands.
Ten people can use the exact same trend and create ten completely different posts from it.
A business coach might turn a trend into a post about things she secretly loves about running a business. A designer might use the exact same format to share her controversial design opinions. A social media manager might make it about the things her clients do that deserve a gold star.

Can Instagram trends actually help your business grow?
Potentially, yes. But I wouldn’t make going viral your number one goal on Instagram.
You don’t just want more people seeing your content. You want the right people finding your content, enjoying it and eventually becoming part of your community.
Trends can help with that.
When a format, audio or idea is already gaining momentum, joining in can give your content a chance to reach people who haven’t come across your business before.
And sometimes, it’s also just fun.
Not every post needs to teach five things, establish your expertise, sell an offer and move someone through your funnel. Sometimes a relatable post that makes someone think “okay, I like this person” is doing its job too.
That being said, I have three rules for using trends as a business or personal brand.
Rule #1: Make the trend yours
This one probably goes without saying, but copying the format isn’t enough.
Ask yourself:
What can I add to this that makes it specific to me, my business or my audience?
Your version should have your opinions, your humor, your expertise, your experiences or something your particular audience will recognize.
The trend is just the starting point.
The best versions are usually the ones where you recognize the trend immediately, but the actual content could only really have come from that creator.
Rule #2: You don’t need to jump on every trend
Please don’t. 😅
Some trends will be perfect for your brand. Some will be completely irrelevant. And some might actually make your brand feel less like you.
Before recreating one, ask yourself:
Does this make sense for my audience? Can I put a relevant spin on it? Does it fit how I want my brand to show up?
If the answer is no, skip it.
There will be another trend next week.
This is also why our Instagram Trends Report doesn’t include every random thing we see going viral. We specifically look for trends that we think online business owners, creators and personal brands can actually turn into useful content.

Rule #3: Don’t overcomplicate it
This might be the most important one.
A trend should be a quick addition to your content strategy, not something you spend three hours recreating.
And definitely don’t put all your eggs in the trend basket.
You still need your educational content, sales content, social proof, personal content and everything else that helps people understand who you are and why they should buy from you.
Trends are just another format you can sprinkle into that mix.
So when you find one you like, create your version, post it and move on.
This is also exactly why we started turning the trends we find into ready-to-customize Canva templates inside our Trend Edit. Instead of spending forever figuring out how to recreate the design or format, you can open the template, add your own spin and get it posted.

So… are social media trends worth it for businesses?
I vote yay, with boundaries.
Use trends to show more personality. Use them to make your content feel current. Use them to reach some new people. And definitely use them when you find one that makes you immediately think “ohhh, I know exactly what I could do with this.”
Just don’t let them become your entire strategy.
Make it yours, pick the right trends and keep it simple.
That’s really it.
